A strong wire cable is used to open the lid.
Pull down on the cable and hook the chain in the bracket on the bin wall, which keeps the lid open.
 
Heavy coil springs hold the lid tightly closed when the cable is released. This holds the lid down and prevents the lid from vibrating in the wind.
